Sand Castles

At the place where water greets land
Children build temporary towers
from the remains of sea creatures,
Remains which hold secret histories.

Histories of explorers and travellers –
Tossed about, drowned, smoothed over.
Histories formed from fragmented truths
about what was and what could have been.

Fragmented truths that create legacies
of entire generations and nations,
Nations built on shifting ground
and teased by rhythmic surf.
